Sydney, is a beautiful city and I'm proud to be a Sydneysider. I was born in the northern beaches and whilst I have lived outside of Australia for a long time I'm now based in the eastern suburbs of Sydney - a few beaches down from Bondi in beautiful Coogee and I'm still in awe of Sydney's natural beauty.
There are few harbour cities in the world that are as stunning as Sydney with the iconic Opera House, Harbour Bridge and Bondi Beach. However there are many other local delights in Sydney and I wanted to share some local insights with you to help make your trip to Australia even more memorable.
From coastal walks to secret beaches, delightful eateries and inspiring art galleries, I wanted to give you a taste of 'Sydney Life' beyond the obvious tourist spots from a local.
For some in Sydney catching a ferry to Manly is an every day commute; however for visitors it's also a scenic trip to beautiful Manly Beach a short ride across the harbour. As you arrive, take a leisurely stroll along the long beach promenade, soaking in the coastal vibes.
For a dining experience on the beach, head to 'The Pantry,' a little restaurant right on Manly Beach. Request a window seat to savour breathtaking views while indulging in delicious meal. This local secret is highly recommended for a memorable ocean side meal.
At the south end of Manly lies beautiful Shelley Beach, a hidden gem for snorkelling enthusiasts. The underwater world here is a vibrant spectacle, teeming with marine life.
Alternatively, catch a ferry from Circular Quay to Watsons Bay, a beautiful harbour suburb with a relaxed atmosphere. The Watsons Bay Hotel offers a perfect setting for a sunny day lunch or twilight meal. Enjoy a delicious meal while overlooking the sparkling waters.
After your meal, treat your taste buds to my vote for the finest ice cream in Australia at nearby Gelatissimo. It promises a sweet indulgence, making it a must-visit spot.
Don't forget to go up the hill and across the road to visit The Gap Lookout to the south head of Sydney harbour for mesmerising ocean views. A leisurely wander along this coastal gem is a perfect way to soak in the beauty of Sydney's coast line.
For those seeking a coastal walk, the Bondi to Coogee coastal walk is a must. Along the way, marvel at the beauty of Icebergs, home to one of the most beautiful pools in Sydney. This iconic spot is also home to Icebergs Dining Room an excellent choice for lunch or dinner with a view. I would suggest going early as it can get very hot. Be sure to take water and a hat.
Continue your walk, and you'll pass Tamarara a beach for the Sydney elite and as you follow the walk you will reach Bronte Beach, where numerous cafes await. Early morning is the best time for the walk, as the midday sun can be quite intense. Dive into the refreshing waters of the ocean pool at Bronte Beach for a perfect cool-down. Always practice safe swimming by staying between the flags at the beach - there's a strong rip at Bronte so another option is 'the boogie hole' at the south end for a dip. It's a fave for the locals.
Another favourite beach is Coogee which is a more relaxed place to swim as the waves always tend to be smaller than other beaches so it is perfect to take an ocean dip. It also has 4 ocean pools to choose from including the only 'women only' ocean pool in Australia. Interestingly it used to be a sacred place for Aboriginal women to give birth many moons ago. If you fancy some old world ocean side pools be sure to visit Wylie's Baths for a $6 entry fee you can settle in for the day complete with ocean-side cafe.
Whilst you are in Coogee be sure to visit the Coogee Pavilion or 'The Pav' as the locals call it. It's a vibrant venue right on the beach with casual dinning on the ground floor, fine dining experience at Mimi's and complete with roof top terrace for some sun and fun overlooking the ocean. There's something for everyone.
For breathtaking panoramic views without the full BridgeClimb price tag, head up to the Pylon Lookout on the Sydney Harbour Bridge. This hidden gem offers sweeping vistas of the Opera House, Circular Quay, and the sparkling harbour below. Along the way, explore exhibits on the bridge’s fascinating history and engineering. It’s a must-do for anyone wanting an unforgettable (and photogenic) perspective of Sydney!
For art lovers like me it's always a treat to visit the Sydney Modern at the Art Gallery NSW. The newly designed building itself is stunning and there are a range of great exhibitions and talks. There's a fabulous selection of aboriginal art at the Art Gallery NSW which is open every Wednesday until 10pm - a great way to indulge in some art after hours.
Another favourite of mine is the White Rabbit in Chippendale for a fix of talented Chinese artists. The White Rabbit showcases one of the world's most significant collections of Chinese contemporary art. Be sure to pop in to the tea house for a delicious fragrant tea to suit every palate. Simply delicious.
Nestled beside the Sydney Opera House, Opera Bar is the perfect place to soak up postcard-worthy views of the Harbour Bridge and waterfront. With a relaxed vibe, great cocktails, and a focus on fresh Aussie produce (especially seafood!), it’s a favourite spot for locals and visitors alike. Whether you’re popping by for a casual lunch, sunset drinks, or a night out, Opera Bar delivers a classic Sydney experience in the most iconic setting.
As you soak up the beauty and energy of Sydney, why not turn unforgettable moments into timeless keepsakes with a professional photography session? Imagine portraits set against the world-famous Opera House, Harbour Bridge, or sun-drenched beaches—each frame a celebration of your once-in-a-lifetime visit.
With Sarah Iris Photography, you’ll enjoy a relaxed, personalised experience that captures not just iconic Sydney scenery, but the genuine joy and connection of your trip. These are portraits you’ll treasure forever - elegant reminders of an extraordinary journey.
Escape the urban hustle of Sydney with a trip to the Blue Mountains, a haven of natural beauty. The Three Sisters and the Scenic Railway, the world's steepest passenger train, are must-visit attractions.
If you have a car, explore hiking trails leading to hidden swimming holes, provide a refreshing dip surrounded by lush landscapes. Paradise Pool is a personal fave complete with waterfall swimming. Have a cheeky peek here at some great waterfalls in the Blue Mountains.
Complete your Blue Mountains adventure with afternoon tea at the Hydro Majestic Hotel. Nestled amid breathtaking scenery, this experience promises a touch of luxury amidst nature's wonders.
