A Sydney Solo Portrait Session at the Opera House with Dana
When Dana travelled to Sydney from North Carolina for her first trip to Australia, she wanted to capture some portraits while she was here.
We met at Sydney Harbour and spent time exploring the area around the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge, creating a relaxed collection of portraits that captured Dana and her experience of being in Sydney.
Exploring Sydney Harbour
Sydney Harbour gave us so much variety for the session. We moved between the Opera House, the harbour foreshore and different viewpoints around the water, creating a mix of portraits that felt different from one another.
Dana brought a beautiful red dress for the session, which looked incredible with the water and architecture around the harbour.
Rather than staying in one place and repeating the same pose, we walked, explored and tried different compositions as we went. I'll guide you throughout the session, so you never need to worry about what to do in front of the camera, while leaving plenty of room for you to relax and be yourself.
A Relaxed Approach to Solo Portraits
I love photographing solo portrait sessions this way. There is plenty of direction, but the experience doesn't need to feel formal or overly posed.
We'll try different poses and locations as we move around, and I'll look for those natural moments in between as well. Sometimes it's a laugh, a little movement or simply the way you naturally move that creates one of my favourite photographs.
For Dana, this meant creating a collection that included both beautifully composed portraits and more spontaneous moments around Sydney Harbour.
Your First Trip to Sydney in Photographs
When you're travelling somewhere for the first time, there are always photographs of the places you visit. But having portraits taken while you're there creates something more personal.
Instead of simply photographing the Sydney Opera House or Harbour Bridge, you're part of the photograph and can remember how you experienced the city.
That's one of the reasons I love photographing visitors to Sydney. Your session can become part of your trip, giving you photographs that bring you back to the places you explored and the experience of being there.
Dana's session was a lovely example of this, with the Opera House, Harbour Bridge and Sydney Harbour providing a beautiful backdrop for her first visit to Australia.
